For patients in and around Fairfield County fat transfer is a method of softening the signs of aging and refining body contours using your own fat tissue. In this treatment, Dr. David Passaretti harvests excess fat deposits and gently injects them where patients need increased volume. Patients considering fat transfer can feel confident our Fairfield County facility is equipped with the most advanced equipment to extract, clean, and redistribute fat cells safely and precisely. Many of our patients undergo liposuction to achieve leaner body contours. During fat transfer Fairfield County plastic surgeon Dr. Passaretti uses this same liposuction technique to gently extract fat. Because these cells need to be preserved, Dr. Passaretti only uses traditional tumescent liposuction rather than SmartLipo™ (in which fat cells are destroyed during extraction). During tumescent liposuction, a saline solution is injected into the extraction site, which makes the fat cells more firm, and helps protect them during extraction.
Fat cells are usually collected from the belly, hips, or thighs. After the treatment area has been injected with saline solution, Dr. Passaretti gently suctions the cells out using a specialized tool called a cannula, and deposits them into a sterile container. Patients will wear a compression garment over their liposuction site for a few weeks following surgery. Patients may receive just enough liposuction to collect cells for fat transfer, or they may choose to undergo full liposuction. Once they have been extracted, fat cells are washed in a saline solution before being cycled through a centrifuge machine. The centrifuge machine cleans the cells and removes debris by spinning them at high speeds to separate them from other matter.
Once healthy fat cells have been cleaned, they are ready to be injected into patients' facial wrinkles, around the nose, cheeks, and eyes. Dr. Passaretti uses an artistic approach to place small amounts of cells in a "feathering" pattern, adding subtle volume through many minor injections. This method helps him add natural-looking volume to the face and reduce the look of fine lines wrinkles.
In addition to the face, fat can be transferred to fill dimples, scarring, and some other surface deformities elsewhere on the body. Dr. Passaretti also uses fat transfer to correct unsatisfactory results of prior liposuction procedures. Fat transfer can also supplement breast reconstruction surgery for post-mastectomy breast cancer patients.
In addition to any follow-up treatment for the liposuction extraction area, patients will usually experience some swelling where fat is injected. Because some fat is absorbed naturally by the body, Dr. Passaretti will inject a slight excess of cells to each treatment area to compensate for loss of volume during recovery. Patients will meet with Dr. Passaretti one week following surgery and will usually see full results within six months of treatment.
